ExxonMobil to Start Gas Reserve Seismic Surveys in Greece
ExxonMobil will start conducting seismic surveys in two blocks southwest of Greece's Peloponnese peninsula and the island of Crete in the coming days, Greece said on Monday.
Greece, an entry point for natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean, aspires to become a gas producer and a hub for the storage and transfer of gas to the rest of Europe, given its location and investments on related infrastructure.
'Our country, regardless of its focus on a fast green transition, is obliged to explore if it has the potential to mine natural gas, which will contribute to our country's energy security and Europe's,' Greece said.
These surveys will begin by ExxonMobil in the coming days.
In July, ExxonMobil and Greece's biggest oil refiner HelleniQ Energy agreed to take over TotalEnergies' share in two contracts for gas and oil exploration off Crete, after the latter pulled out.
ExxonMobil is the operator, owning 70% of the rights for looking for hydrocarbons off Crete. HelleniQ Energy holds the rest.
It said in April the country plans to speed up exploration for gas reserves to replace Russian gas with indigenous resources. The country aims to have a clear idea by 2023 on whether it has gas reserves it could tap.

Germany’s Covestro pauses $1.5bn MDI plant project on economic woes
Covestro has halted plans to build a $1.5bn methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) plant as economic conditions continue to weaken, the German chemicals major said on Monday.
Covestro said the “severely disrupted” global economy due to the energy crisis and inflationary pressures had prompted it to reassess “at a later time” the MDI plant project.
This decision by Covestro marks yet another twist in the tale for the project.
In January 2020, Covestro halted plans to build a 500,000 tonne/year MDI plant in Baytown, Texas.
Subsequently, in September 2021, Covestro said it would resume the investment project but did not disclose whether it would be in Baytown or elsewhere.
Up until September this year, the company was still saying it would proceed with its second attempt to build a large-scale MDI plant.
The company was mulling over the US or China as potential locations.
However, the company’s CEO Markus Steilemann had conceded in an investor call in September 2021 that planned capital expenditure (capex) of $1.5bn for this project would need to increase, especially if the plant were to be built in the US.
As economic woes continued mounting over the past two months, the company finally decided to pause the project.
“The war, the European energy crisis and…growing inflation have severely disrupted the global economy,” said Steilemann, as he described the decision to “pause the project for the moment and reassess it at a later time”.
Both the plant’s location and its production capacity have yet to be decided.
The company’s CFO, Thomas Toepfer, spoke of “unprecedented challenges that are shifting the global economic situation fundamentally” which prompted Covestro to take “a closer look” at the MDI project.
Covestro’s third-quarter earnings fell sharply, year on year, on the back of higher energy and raw materials costs, the company said in October.
MDI is consumed mainly in polyurethane (PU) foams, which account for about 80% of global consumption.
Rigid foams, the largest outlet for MDI, are used mostly in construction, refrigeration, packaging and insulation.
MDI is also used to make binders, elastomers, adhesives, sealants, coatings and fibres.

Huawei called for network evolution at COP27 to enable green development
Huawei Technologies Co. said information and communications technologies, or ICT, will enable the digitalization of industry, spark innovation and make other industries green.
The remarks were made at a meeting organized by the Global Innovation Hub of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at the ongoing 27th session of the Conference of the Parties, or COP27, in Egypt, on Thursday.
Referring to what is known as the 'enabling effect', Philippe Wang, Huawei's executive vice president for the Northern Africa region, said ICT is 'making other industries greener'.
'5G, artificial intelligence, data analytics, cloud computing – all these things will improve industrial processes in a way that cuts energy use, and lowers carbon emissions,' he said.
According to Wang, in the same way that ICT enables a smart streetlight to turn itself off when no one is around, 5G wireless base stations can automatically shut down when there is no data traffic, which saves energy.
Base stations need a power source and have antennas. For its part, Huawei has been replacing diesel generators with solar panels, which offer a cleaner source of electric power, in Nigeria and Angola. At the same time, the company has launched a green 5G antenna that can cut energy consumption.

Germany's Wilo Group to pump more investment into China
After seeing its sales revenue surge by more than 20 percent year-on-year in China in 2021, Wilo Group, a German provider of pumps and pump systems, will add investment in the country and put a new plant into operation in Changzhou, Jiangsu province, in early 2023, said a senior executive.
Together with other manufacturing bases in China, the new factory's products will not only supply the Chinese market but be exported to other emerging markets, said Lyman Tu, Wilo's vice-president for China and Southeast Asia.
The German company produces water pumps that are used in a wide range of functions, such as cooling and heating systems for central air-conditioning in buildings, sponge city construction and industrial factories.
Founded in 1872 with its headquarters in Dortmund, Germany, Wilo marked its 150th year anniversary ceremony at the 5th China International Import Expo in Shanghai to share its historic milestone with Chinese partners.
Tu said the CIIE has already become a bridge and platform for multinational companies to engage with their customers in China.
'We believe that the CIIE will further unleash China's opportunities and demonstrate the huge potential of the Chinese market for foreign investors,' he said.
To achieve the dual carbon goals and keep improving production efficiency at the same time, Chinese industries are undergoing a dual transformation toward digitalization and sustainability, which has raised the emerging need for innovative, green and digital solutions, and has brought numerous opportunities for Wilo to further grow in China, Tu noted.
Wilo currently runs 15 business branches and two manufacturing bases in Beijing and Qinhuangdao, Hebei province.
With the growing importance and potentials of the Chinese market, Wilo has announced further investment in R&D and to enlarge its product portfolio in China in its 2025 strategy.
China's broad market prospects, integrated supply chain and improving market environment are the main reasons for Wilo to expand its presence, said Tu, adding China will likely become the group's largest market by 2023.
Many opportunities also come from China's efforts to efficiently use its water resources, surging demand for high-efficient solutions for businesses from sectors including big data and artificial intelligence, manufacturing, water sewage disposal and treatment, mining, power industry, metals, and commercial building services, said Sang Baichuan, dean of the Institute of International Economy at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing.
