On 30th, March 2011, the 2nd Forum on World City with Chinese Characteristics & Beijing Great Wall Friendship Ceremony was held in Beijing. Zheng Wantong, Vice Chairman of CPPCC and President of CICPMC addressed the forum and attended the opening ceremony of the forum with Guo Jinlong, the mayor of Beijing, accompanied by Zhang Xiaoyu, the executive Vice President and Secretary General of CICPMC.
The topic of the forum is ' Focus on the Chinese Characteristics and Build World City'. The forum conducted a extensive and further study of the model and path to make Beijing a modern metropolis with Chinese Characteristic as well as a harmonious and livable capital for grand international events, high-end global corportation headquarters, excellent talents and advanced cultures. It also touched upon the topic of promoting the implementation of the strategy of building a 'Humanistic Beijing, Technological Beijing, Green Beijing'.
Vice Chairman Zheng Wantong said:' Chinese Characteristics should become the underlying contents of building a world city, which means an important nodal metropolis with its strong influence and leverage of global politics, economics and culture. Being a developing country, there is no off-the-peg mode for China to follow or ready-made experience to draw from . Neither shall we copy the western mode and practice. It is a new Beijing rather than a new New York, Tokyo or London that we are planning to build. Hence it is necessary to combine and integrate various elements and factors to achieve the target of successfully building a international metropolis with strong global influence and leverage ability.
Meanwhile Zheng Wantong also stressed that whereas it is necessary to follow universal law and insist on the high standards, it is also essential to explore new modes with Chinese characteristics and capital elements in this very process. However, more efforts are needed to carry out comprehensive research so that the spiritual pursuit and the new look of Chinese people as well as the unique charm and innovation capacity of Beijing could be fully reflected through the scientific interpretation and creativity of the new contents of Chinese characteristics. In other words, how to build a world city with Chinese characteristics under the specific and realistic situation of China is a forward-looking, dual nature and systematic question of great significance. The practice of building Beijing as a world city should also plays an important role in the exploration the road of socialism with Chinese Characteristics.
