On September 25 to 27, University for Peace (UPEACE) held the opening ceremony for its doctoral program on “leadership and sustainable development” and gave lectures in Wuxing District, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province. The event was organized by the China Center of UPEACE. Zhang Xiaoyu, Member of the Council of UPEACE and Executive Vice President of the China International Council for the Promotion of Multinational Corporations (CICPMC), and Zhang Xinyuan, Director-General of the China Center of UPEACE, attended the event on behalf of the university. Some specially-appointed professors also attended the event, including Zhao Bin, Senior Vice President of Qualcomm, Zhang Xinsheng, Executive Vice President of Royal Dutch Shell and Chairman of Shell China as well as Huang Bilie, General Manager of China Merchants Group Finance Co., Ltd.
On the morning of September 26, Zhang Xiaoyu, Member of the university council, hosted the opening ceremony for the doctoral program. Francisco Rojas Aravena, President of UPEACE, addressed the event through video. Zhang Xinyuan, Director-General of China Center, delivered a keynote speech.

In his address, President Aravena expressed his gratitude for the unremitting efforts of Zhang Xiaoyu and Zhang Xinyuan over the past three years as well as the long-standing trust and support of all specially-appointed professors and students. He believed that this doctoral program would open a new chapter for the cooperation between the UPEACE and China, which would facilitate their teaching activities in the country. He hoped that this program could serve as a platform for everyone to pool their ideas so as to theoretically and systematically enhance individual, corporate and governmental leadership through materialist dialectics and thus enable corporation in promoting global governance and sustainable development.
During the event, specially-appointed professors Zhao Bin and Zhang Xinsheng gave lectures on the latest developments of China’s anti-trust law and case reviews as well as leadership in energy transition respectively. Active interactions between professors and students created an enthusiastic atmosphere. After class, the students visited some business projects, such as Huixin Valley, Giraffe Manor and Beauty Town.

The University for Peace was established in 1980 under the UN General Assembly Resolution 35/55. Headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica, it covers an area of over300 hectares. UPEACE is the only university in the world that awards master’s degree and doctor’s degree under the authorization of the General Assembly. It is also an international organization dedicated to global governance.

To ensure academic freedom, UPEACE is directly managed by the university council with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres being the Honorary President. CICPMC is the only partner of UPEACE in China. At the invitation of Mr. Guterres, Zhang Xiaoyu, Executive Vice President of CICPMC, serves as the only Chinese Member of the Council of UPEACE.
