Introduction of CICPMC

China International Council for the Promotion of Multinational Corporations (hereinafter referred to as CICPMC) is a non-governmental organization approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China, and it was granted Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Mr. Du Qinglin, Secretary of the Secretariat of the 18th Central Committee and Vice-Chairman of the 11th and 12th National Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) is now Honorary President of CICPMC. Mr. Zhou Tienong, Vice Chairman of the 11th Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress is Specially-Invited President of CICPMC. Relying on the government, focusing on multinationals and aiming to serve, CICPMC is committed to the growth and cooperation of multinational corporations, and has done a lot of fruitful work in this regard. Most of the Fortune 500, top 500 Chinese SOEs and top 500 Chinese private companies are members of CICPMC, and many UN agencies, commercial offices of embassies in China, chambers of commerce and international organizations are our strategic partners.

Since its founding in 1993, CICPMC has received support and attention from state leaders such as Hu Jintao、Wu Bangguo、Wen Jiabao、Li Keqiang、Jia Qinglin、Zhang Dejiang、Huang Ju、Wu Yi、Du Qinglin、Cheng Siwei、Zhou Tienong、Zheng Wantong、Wang Yong, and former UN Secretary-Generals Kofi Annan, Ban Ki-moon and António Guterres. Over the past two decades and more, following the basic national policy of reform and opening-up, CICPMC has not only provided customized solutions to enterprises for development, but also built a platform for cooperation and exchanges between government and multinational corporations, and between Chinese and foreign multinational corporations. CICPMC has contributed its due share to China’s economic growth by submitting important suggestions and proposals to the government and relevant ministries.

Along with relevant ministries, international organizations and Chinese and foreign chambers of commerce, CICPMC has held over ten international conferences, including World Economic Development Declaration Conference, High Level International Conference on Millennium Development Goals, Economic and Trade Talks of China-US Large-Scale Enterprises, Seminar on China’s Economic Conditions and International Roundtable of Multinational Corporations’ Leaders.

Particularly, on Nov. 6th and 7th, 2003, under the auspices of the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, with the support of the then President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao, among other state leaders, and over 20 ministries, international organizations, foreign chambers of commerce, CICPMC planed, organized and successfully held the World Economic Development Declaration Conference in Zhuhai, Guangzhou and published the World Economic Development Declaration (the Declaration), the first of its kind so far in the world. 28 days after its release, the Declaration was distributed in the documents of the 58th UN General Assembly to all member states, enhancing China’s global status and influence with profound impacts across the world.

To carry forward the spirits of the Declaration, CICPMC started to hold annual International Roundtables of Multinational Corporations’ Leaders together with UNDP, UNCTAD, UNEP, UNIDO, UN Global Compact and UPEACE in 2007. The roundtables take on the theme of “openness, inclusiveness, cooperation and win-win”, encourages investment of multinationals, strengthens corporate social responsibility and promotes sustainable development. All the roundtables have received congratulatory letters from UN Secretary-Generals, attended by leaders of all industries, including 34 national leaders, 183 leaders at or above the deputy ministerial level of China and foreign countries, 1,412 leaders of multinational corporations from 137 countries, over 3,900 representatives of multinational corporations in China, 3,013 leaders of Chinese state-owned and private enterprises, 181 officials, representatives and economists from international organizations, governments, embassies and chambers of commerce. Many of them have delivered speeches or had dialogues during the roundtables.

Along with globalization and the further reform and open-up, CICPMC will take advantage of its vast resources both home and abroad to build higher and wider platforms of international exchange and cooperation for Chinese and foreign enterprises, and facilitate the projects they wish to implement. CICPMC will continue to plan and organize large-scale activities in China and elsewhere to create ample opportunities for Chinese and foreign enterprises to share resources, build friendship, communicate with each other and cooperate for mutual benefits. With customized professional services based on the market and international standards, CICPMC will better assist foreign and domestic multinational enterprises, and contribute to the sound and sustainable growth of China’s economy.
